US Government Shutdown Sets Unprecedented Record as Longest in US History

The United States federal closure has now reached its thirty-sixth day, establishing it as the longest period of federal shutdown in the nation's records.

This shutdown, which began on October 1st, was triggered by Congress's inability to reach a new funding deal. It has left federal employees without paychecks and countless citizens lacking critical government services.

Democrats and Republicans have been deadlocked for weeks with no signs of compromise - although some glimmers of hope are beginning to show.

"I just think, from my intuition of how these things operate, I think we're approaching an off-ramp here," the Senate's top Republican stated.

The former government shutdown record occurred during Donald Trump's initial presidency and lasted 35 days before it ended in 2019.

Increasing Impacts on Citizens

Over recent weeks since this shutdown started, the effects on everyday Americans have worsened.

Numerous government employees have already missed paychecks, and there are growing fears about impacts to aviation across the US as air traffic controllers and airport staff work without pay.

"If you bring us to next week, you will see mass chaos," the Transportation Secretary stated. "Expect extensive flight delays. There will be mass cancellations, and you may see close certain parts of the national airspace, because we cannot properly operate because we don't have air traffic control staff."

Nutrition Benefits Crisis

The effects have particularly affected by low-income Americans who depend on government services.

One in eight people in the US are reliant upon nutrition benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, but only a portion of that assistance is being paid out this month due to lapsed funding.

The former president's team had - initially - said no food assistance money would be dispersed in November but a US court ordered that emergency resources be used to provide citizens some assistance.

"[Snap benefits] will be provided only when the opposition party open up government, something they can readily accomplish, and not before," the former president wrote on social media.

Political Deadlock

Lawmakers in the US Senate have considered the same temporary budget measure to reopen the government repeatedly with unsuccessful results. They tried once more recently to no avail.

That proposal passed the House of Representatives in September.

Democrats have thus far declined to back the temporary funding on government funding unless the majority party consented to continue healthcare subsidies for economically disadvantaged citizens. Republicans have resisted, accusing their counterparts of using government operations as leverage over separate political objectives.

"If we don't start seeing any advancement or some evidence of movement by at least the middle of this week, it becomes difficult to imagine completing any agreement by the week's conclusion," the senior Republican informed journalists. "And I think that would be the goal here, is to try and get something that we could send back to the House that would restart the federal operations."

Over the past few days, there have been indications that some moderate Democrats and governing party members are keen to discuss and reach an agreement ahead of the holiday on November 27th.
