The Reason Los Blancos Possess 'Complete Confidence' in Teenager Pitarch
Whenever a 18-year-old makes club history in a pivotal European tie against Manchester City, it naturally attracts acclaim and the spotlight.
In only his maiden start in the competition - and fifth game for the team - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the 15-time Champions League winners secured a three-nil last-16 first-leg advantage at the Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also made his club debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then assisted the Madrid side overcome the English champions in the midweek return to confirm a quarter-final berth.
Aged 18 years old, Pitarch became the team's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating star Vinicius Jr's previous mark by 10 days.
Rapid Ascent Through The Academy
The midfielder is the latest to come through from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting protegees.
He joined Madrid from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe youth teams, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a strong impression.
He progressed to the reserve side and it was during a friendly match in which they faced the senior squad, then coached by Arbeloa, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who replaced the previous coach in the new year.
Spanish media would later label the moment as "an instant connection," noting he stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, personality and determination he added to the side.
'His Best Attribute Is His Personality'
In the pre-season of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso called up Pitarch to practice with the first team and awarded him playing time during pre-season.
However, it was the change in manager that proved the turning point in his development as he was introduced as a late substitute in both ties against Benfica that set up the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.
"I've dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the very first time I began playing football, every day you go to train and every day you have a game," said the player after his first appearance.
"I have just achieved my dream with the greatest club in the planet and in the top tournament."
Given a starting debut in La Liga against Getafe - where he was for four years after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his place for the next four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opening.
The teenager has taken it with performances that have defied his age and experience.
"He's a extremely fast footballer, and you can see his capabilities," remarked Arbeloa. "He's extremely energetic, with excellent endurance, work-rate and movement."
Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his manager.
"His greatest quality is his character," added he. "He constantly demands the possession, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.
"I realize people are surprised to see him start in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had total trust in him to perform what he usually does.
"Thiago will keep receiving opportunities with the first team. It's a pleasure to have a player like him."
Spain or Morocco?
Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up fully immersed in Spanish football, progressing through local academies before entering Real Madrid's renowned youth academy.
He holds both Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, giving him the option to play for both nations at senior international level.
According to Fifa eligibility rules, players may represent multiple nations at youth level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only binding once they play in a competitive senior international match.
He has featured for Spain at youth level, turning out for both the U19 and under-20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja reached the last eight.
Despite this, he has not yet decided to either senior national team, who are watching his rise with keen attention.
Speaking recently, the player said: "I have not taken my ultimate choice yet. My situation is positive with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a decision soon."
His situation echoes that of other dual nationality talents such as club colleague Brahim Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. While 18-year-old Lamine chose La Roja, Diaz opted to represent the Atlas Lions.
Eyes on the Prize
For now, his attention is on establishing himself in the Real side and repaying Arbeloa's faith.
He featured for over an hour in the 2-1 victory at the Etihad, which completed a 5-1 aggregate success and a last-eight matchup with Bayern Munich.
His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Angel underscored the coach's confidence in the next generation to help the club pursue trophies to come.
After his notable contributions to date on the Champions League, the midfielder is tipped to be a central figure in that.
"The manager handles me the identical way. We handle it very normally. I attempt not to overanalyze it excessively - I must earn my playing time on the field," he commented after the success at Manchester.
