Massive Turmoil Projected: UK's Most Severe Climate Emergency Possibilities Laid Bare by Scientists
The most severe projected effects of the climate crisis for the UK have been outlined by researchers, ranging from a scorching 4C increase in mean temperatures to a 6.5-foot surge in sea level. A separate possibility predicts a plunge of 6C in temperature following the failure of critical Atlantic Ocean currents, which would severely impact farming and power requirements.
Credible Outcomes, Not Guarantees
These impacts, certain ones are linked to critical climate thresholds, are viewed as improbable but possible. The researchers stated that these projections addressed a shortfall in forecasting that had rendered the UK unprepared for catastrophic possibilities.
"The worst-case scenarios we have mapped should not be seen as certainties, but they are plausible," stated the professor who led the study. "Britain has been planning lacking the frameworks to test against extreme possibilities. We've now supplied policymakers what they need to plan for environmental results they wish to avoid, but dare not dismiss."
A Spectrum of Harsh Climate Projections
A second set of severe models details the projected severity of extreme weather between now and the year 2100. These show that thermometer readings could skyrocket in particular seasons by up to 6C above the norm, while rainfall could be three times standard measurements.
The likelihood of the extreme scenarios coming to pass cannot be precisely determined due to unknown factors about what measures will be implemented to address global warming and how the Earth's systems will respond. This research was compared to defence planning or stress tests for financial systems.
Key Outcome Elements
- 4C Temperature Rise: Global temperatures soaring past 4C by 2100 could happen if climate action fails or if vicious cycles such as the Amazon basin perishing emit its enormous store of carbon. This would lead to extreme and prolonged heatwaves and water shortages hitting the UK in summer.
- AMOC Shutdown: A major ocean current, the AMOC, is weakening and showing signs of collapse due to climate change. A full shutdown beginning in 2030 would lead to a six-degree temperature drop in the UK. "Farming would struggle enormously and water resources would be fundamentally reshaped," explained the professor.
- Sudden Ocean Inundation: A rise of 2.0-2.2 metres around the UK by 2100 could take place if ice sheets in the polar regions disintegrate quickly, submerging seaside communities. Unlike the other scenarios, this risk is already recognized by planners.
- Pollution Paradox: Temperatures could also be driven up by about 0.75C if pollution from industry is rapidly cleaned up. This paradoxical outcome occurs because pollution particles from fossil fuel combustion scatter sunlight from warming the ground.
Preparing for the Extreme
The severe models could be utilized in planning the construction of major projects, such as expanded cities, nuclear power stations and water management networks. Knowledge about these climate risks could also accelerate the transition to reduce fossil fuel emissions.
The study developed the severe projections using a blend of observed and historical experience, computer simulations and climate physics. The scenarios do not take into account potential global problems including the agricultural collapse and increased conflict.
The project was requested as part of a national climate resilience programme. Previous assessments have stated that too little consideration was being paid to low‐likelihood but high‐impact risks.
The government's climate advisors has stated that the UK needs to "become resilient to moderate heating" and examine the threats for 4C. Earlier government strategies have been described as being "inadequate" by environmental groups.
A national response noted: "Climate change is at the core of our national priorities, both adapting for the future and becoming a renewable energy leader. It is essential that the UK is prepared for the consequences."
