Gamers Are Receiving an Upcoming Release in the Best Star Wars Series Ever Made, Directed by a Mass Effect Dev.

The galaxy far, far away fans have no shortage of titles when it comes to great video games wielding lightsabers, but the universe created by George Lucas is more than a playground for conflict. Rarely have games have understood this better than Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, which was crafted in the traditional computer role-playing game vein that made companies like Obsidian and BioWare famous. Now, after a number of starts and stops, The Game Awards has unveiled that fans will soon be able to experience a spiritual successor to the series. It's called Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic.

The Major Announcement

Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is labeled "a fresh single-player narrative-driven action RPG and successor in spirit to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic." Veteran developer Casey Hudson, previously at BioWare and the director of the original KOTOR, is at the helm at Arcanaut Studios.

“When we crafted the original KOTOR, we wanted to create a ultimate Star Wars experience — shaping an adventure that contained all the things we dreamed of doing as Star Wars fans,” the developer said. “Now, 25 years after we started work on that game, our ambitions are equally ambitious. Fate of the Old Republic signifies an chance to explore a modern vision of a ultimate Star Wars experience, using state-of-the-art technology and game design, and an completely original story crafted specifically to fulfill the fusion of player agency and immersion in Star Wars that was at the heart of KOTOR.”

A Surprising Development

The news is something of a surprise, given that 2022 saw a contemporary effort at an Old Republic game get shelved. However, reports had suggested that a revival of KotOR, as well as one of its follow-up, had been under development up until March 2025.

Here is the synopsis for the new title:

Developed by Arcanaut Studios in partnership with Lucasfilm Games, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is a new single-player narrative-driven action RPG and spiritual successor to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Led by Casey Hudson, Game director of the original Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic and the Mass Effect trilogy, the team of veteran game developers and storytellers at Arcanaut Studios is crafting an epic interactive adventure across a galaxy on the brink of rebirth where every decision shapes your path towards light or darkness. Fate is in your hands.

The Legacy of KOTOR

The venerated role-playing games, which have recently been ported to platforms like the Switch, are famous for their narrative-focused, player-influenced, and stat-imbued approach to Star Wars. The games were impactful enough that they inadvertently codified how people visualize the Old Republic era as a whole, still today. The games bravely chose to question many tenets of Jedi lore that are often seen as unquestionable, like whether the group and its understanding of the Force are correct. The second game, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, went in a far more grim direction by posing the question if the world might not be wiser without the Jedi at all. Both games are venerated by fans long after their release, but the follow-up in particular is considered by some as one of the best pieces of Star Wars media in existence.

The Future is Bright

And now, several years after receiving a cinematic trailer for a Knights of the Old Republic remake, the community is at last being granted another game in the same vein. Given the appetite for complex games like Baldur's Gate 3 or Divinity: Original Sin, a fresh interpretation on Knights of the Old Republic that's executed properly has the potential to be wildly successful.
