The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
