Are You Able to Solve It? That Forgotten Dutch Invention Which Forged the Modern Globe

One can find many candidates to claim the designation as “world’s most significant innovation.” The wheel. The movable type. The steam engine.

According to a new book, though, that honor belongs to a automated timber mill conceived by Dutch inventor Cornelis Corneliszoon during 1593.

“Before mechanised sawing, building a simple merchant vessel necessitated around ten sawyers laboring over three months,” writes the author. “With wind-driven sawmills, an identical quantity of cut lumber might be produced in less than a week.”

Owing to this rapid mechanical saw, that converted timber to planks with almost no human effort, Dutch builders were able to construct ships faster than anyone else, an advantage that sparked a century of Netherlands maritime, financial as well as cultural dominance across the continent and the globe.

Corneliszoon’s lumber mill, argues Dávila, represented “humanity’s first authentic industrial machine.” A wind turbine rotated a gear. A separate mechanism transformed that same spinning movement into a lateral motion feeding the timber to the blade. A ratchet system moved the log forward a measured step per cycle.

“Every component seemed simple by itself. Corneliszoon’s brilliance lay in how to integrate these parts in order that the machine operated within a precisely synchronized sequence, cutting with each downward stroke while advancing with each upward stroke. This constituted an astonishingly clever use of basic parts.”
