Adult Swim's Leading New Show of This Year Gets a Substantial Extension for Two More Seasons.

In October of last year, Adult Swim welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the channel unveiled a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. At a time often marked by dark humor, this show's wholesomeness struck a chord and turned it into a breakout hit.

A Major Commitment

In mid-December, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."

Network Praise

Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who discovered the show and championed its uniquely offbeat style.

"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about observing this charming family go about their everyday routines.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to help comedy break out of its prevailing cynical streak. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”

The Path Forward

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa may well help usher in that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to experience the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
